Defending Preppies
A friend forwarded a blog to me, kitty something (I already forgot the name). All about fashion, not one of my favorite topics but I read the post on popped collars. (there is the link) And I felt that I had to stand up for regular preppy guys everywhere. Listen, I don't know if you pop your collar or wear whales on your pants, but If you are a preppy you do not look down on people who do. Being a preppy guy is a feeling, a relaxed "style" (because it's not 'style') and a fun loving attitude. We have a sense of humor, actually one of the best; right Muffy. (...And she stepped on the ball..)
And it may be a shock to some, there are MANY preppy people and I have never met ONE who I would describe as a "fool" or "stupid"....
Ok, off my soap box now...

I live near Georgetown in Washington DC...home of the popped collar.
When rocking the preppy look, it is important to only rock one of the cliches. So do the preppy pink shirt, do the whales, do the yellow pants...do NOT do them all at once.
And don't get me started on madras pants...
I like preps...not a fan of the punk look...but too much can be a bit overwhelming...you want to admire the personality of said prep, not the blinding "Stef" and "Blane"-ness of the composite look.
Is your "... and she stepped on the ball ..." from Auntie Mame or Trading Places? Both hilarious, so kudos to you for that reference! Locust Valley Lockjaw anyone?!
from Trading Places (which took it from Auntie Mame)
Dear Circe: I think what you are seeing are a whole lot of A&F preppy wantabees(maybe)? I have many pieces of clothing that I think you would think are too much (yes madras!) I never really "think" about what I'll wear; it just is putting them on.
I too think the punk look is crazy outside of college...
SOOOOOOOOO glad I never went the punk route! Totally agree about the A&F preppy wanna-be's.
Tod,
Did you notice "fashion kitty" admits lust to Howard Stern? I am sorry but that says it all...
Yes. I do listen to Howard Stern, atleast I am not sitting around listening to the snooze-fest NPR anxiously awaiting the day king preppie "zach morris" has his own morning show. UN POP YOUR COLLAR!!!!!
Zack Morris will forever be a god. Those who disagree must settle for Screech.
LOL...it seems someone hit a nerve with the radio comments...
Personally can't stand Howard. I just think listening for a few hours about a guy who talks about himself is boring...
Trading Places - Great movie - one of my favorite Eddie Murphy flicks. Anyway, I am guilty of the popped collar & have been for most of my life -- I don't do it to BE preppy, it's just how I wear a polo shirt - always has been. I also sport my madras shorts & whale belts, proudly, but again, not TRYING to communicate to the world that I am preppy & that signifies something. I agree that Preppy is not a fashion statement, it is a lifestyle -- my clothing is plain, simple, classic -- that holds true in my opinions, as well. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but if you are truly classy, you refrain from "mocking" people's personal choice of clothing!
How can you have a conscience of what you are wearing when you have worn the same style for eternity (figure of speech)? Before I began reading blogs just two months ago, I had no concept of my clothes sending a message other than neat and orderly. When did a ribbon headband become a lifestyle choice? And to think I have been taking my grosgrain for granted, bad Kiki
It's funny (amazing) how people who like to criticize other people don't like to be criticized themselves.
At some point we just need to agree to disagree.
Hilarious. I love how some people just have to HATE preppies. I don't like the Goth look but I also don't sit around and complain about it. I pop, so there!
I am preppy... I come from a very nice town in RI, and I love it! :) I hate the haters!
